Plougonvelin ( Breton Plougonvelen ) is a French commune with 4174 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in north-west Brittany in the Finistère department .
location
The municipality is located near the Atlantic coast at the mouth of the Bay of Brest ( Rade de Brest ) into the open sea.
Brest is 18 kilometers southeast and Paris about 520 kilometers east (as the crow flies ). The Côte des Abers begins at the Pointe de Saint-Mathieu .

The expressways E 50 (Brest- Rennes ) and E 60 (Brest- Nantes ) end at Brest . Brest train station is the terminus of the TGV Atlantique to Paris and the regional train lines in the direction of Rennes and Nantes.
The Aéroport de Brest Bretagne regional airport is located near the city of Brest .

Attractions
Worth seeing in the touristically well developed coastal town are u. a. the Cape Pointe de Saint-Mathieu with the 37 meter high lighthouse Saint-Mathieu, built in 1835, and the Fort de Bertheaume , built in the 17th century to protect the strategically important entrance to the port of Brest . The Museum Mémoires 39-45 , which was set up in 2017 in a former battery position of the Atlantic Wall , presents the history of the Second World War from a local perspective.
