Saint-Pierre church

Plouguin ( Breton Plougin ) is a municipality with 2151 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Finistère department in Brittany in France . It belongs to the Communauté de communes du Pays des Abers and was part of the canton of Ploudalmézeau .

The name is derived from the Breton words ploe (community) and ken (beautiful). Other sources attribute the second syllable to Saint Gwen .

In 2004 a wind farm with five wind turbines was built in the north-west of the municipality , which delivers more than 27 million kWh of electrical energy per year.

On December 21, 2008, the municipality joined the Ya d'ar brezhoneg Charter for the promotion of the Breton language.

Plouguin is about 20 kilometers northwest of Brest , about seven kilometers from the English Channel . The municipality is crossed in a north-south direction by the Garo River, which drives many mills .

To the north, Plouguin is bounded by the Aber Benoît . The highest elevation in the municipality is 82 m.

Variants of the parish name include Ploueguen (1173), Ploeken (approx. 1330), Ploeguin (1371), Ploeguen (1481) and Ploueguen (1544).
