On August 4, 1944, while awaiting the immediate liberation by the US Army , local maquisards attacked a Wehrmacht observation group on the church tower of Gouesnou. A German naval anti-aircraft unit hurried to help from Brest arrested all the men, women and children they could find, took them to Penguerec, shot them in the so-called Penguerec massacre and burned most of the bodies.
