Jyri Kjäll (born January 13, 1969 in Seinäjoki ) is a former Finnish boxer .

Amateur career

Jyri Kjäll was Finnish champion five times (1990 to 1993 light welterweight and 1994 welterweight), won the Tammer tournament in 1990 and the Scandinavian championships in 1990 and 1992.

At the European Championships in Gothenburg in 1991 he was eliminated in the preliminary round against the Dane Søren Søndergaard and at the 1991 World Championships in Sydney in the quarter-finals against the Cuban Candelario Duvergel .

In the European Olympic qualification in Italy in 1992 , he defeated, among others, Vukašin Dobrašinović and reached the semifinals, where he was eliminated against the eventual Italian tournament winner Michele Piccirillo , but was able to qualify. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona he won the preliminary round against the Spaniard Sergio Rey, this time also against the Italian Michele Piccirillo in the round of 16 and in the quarter-finals against the Hungarian László Szűcs , before losing in the semifinals to the Cuban Héctor Vinent and with a bronze medal retired at light welterweight.

At the 1993 World Championships in Tampere , he won the silver medal in the light welterweight division. With victories against the Ukrainian Dmitri Lasarew, the Dane Thomas Damgaard , the Romanian Leonard Doroftei and the Russian Oleg Saitow , he moved into the final, where he lost to the Cuban Héctor Vinent.

Professional career

Jyri Kjäll boxed as a professional from December 1994 to April 2002 and played 24 fights, of which he won 23, 17 of them prematurely. He suffered his only defeat in June 1995 against the Colombian Juan Candelo. He fought 14 of his fights in the US , six in Finland, and one each in France , Belgium , Great Britain and Denmark .

His greatest success was winning the IBF- Intercontinental title on April 20, 2001 in the welterweight division through a knockout win in the ninth round against the then undefeated Dane and later European champion Christian Bladt.
