Edwin "Chapo" Rosario (born March 15, 1963 in Toa Baja , Puerto Rico , † December 1, 1997 ibid) was a Puerto Rican boxer .

Professional career

After an amateur career with 28 wins and two losses, "Chapo" turned professional in 1979 at the age of 16, first in bantamweight, then in lightweight, supervised by Tyson managers Bill Cosell and Jim Jacobs. He was one of the most powerful boxers in this class in the 1980s, but on the other hand placed little emphasis on defense and only had average taker skills (is therefore sometimes compared to Ike Williams ).

At the age of only 20 he succeeded on May 1, 1983, winning the vacant WBC title against the Mexican southpaw José Luis Ramírez with a points victory that was rare for him. In two title defenses he beat Roberto Elizondo by first-round knockout, he defeated Olympic champion Howard Davis just on points. Then there was a rematch with Ramirez. He had his opponent on the ground early, but was stopped on lap four and had to give up the title.

He then defeated the then unknown Frankie Randall . In 1986 he was controversially defeated by his compatriot Hector Camacho on points. In the same year he was able to prevail through a short knockout (in the second round) against the well-known good taker Livingstone Bramble and thus won the WBA title. He defended the title against Juan Nazario by knockout, then met in 1987 on a standing at the height of his skills Julio César Chávez , who literally took him apart and defeated him prematurely in the eleventh round. In 1989 he won the WBA title (given by Chavez) back by knocking out Anthony Jones, but lost in the next fight in April 1990 against Nazario after being canceled due to lacerations.

In 1991 he rose to light welterweight and defeated WBA world champion Loreto Garza by knockout in round three. But he quickly lost this title again when he lost to Japanese southpaw Akinobu Hiranaka in the first round.

After a knockout loss in the rematch with Randall, he ended his career in 1993. A comeback attempt in 1997 failed. He continually came into conflict with the law and died of drug problems at the age of 34.

In 2006 Rosario was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame .
