José Luis Ramírez (born March 12, 1958 in Huatabampo ) is a retired Mexican boxer.

Professional career

South African Ramírez started in 1973 in featherweight and boxed until 1980 exclusively in his home country. In April 1978 he lost in his 45th professional fight against the aging superstar Rubén Olivares by technical knockout in the second round.

Almost all of his known fights took place in the lightweight. In 1980 he only just lost to Alexis Argüello and was able to beat his opponent, who was considered an above-average taker, to the ground. The following year he was defeated by the American Ray Mancini.

He got his first title chance on May 1, 1983, when he boxed for the vacant WBC title in Puerto Rico against the hard-hitting local hero Edwin Rosario and lost on points.

But he was able to win the rematch in November 1984 sensationally by technical knockout in round four. He was on the ground in this fight, but was considered a world class overall. That win is pretty much his only undisputed success against a world class boxer. He lost the WBC crown in 1985 to Hector Camacho , another Puerto Rican southpaw.

From 1986 he boxed mainly in France. He won the now vacant WBC title back against Terrence Alli in July 1987 and defended it against Cornelius Boza-Edwards.

1988 came the most notorious fight of his career when he was clearly dominated by the undefeated Olympic champion Pernell Whitaker (also southpaw) in France, but was declared the winner with a scandalous decision . Lou Duva of Whitaker's promotion company Main Events later said, alluding to this judgment and Whitaker's (official) draw against another Mexican Julio César Chávez , Whitaker had won all fights except the one against José Sulaimán (President of the WBC).

Next Ramírez denied a union fight against the WBA title holder Chávez, which he lost on points. He was also defeated in the following rematch against Whitaker in the USA.

In March 1990 he got against the Argentine Juan Coggi one last title fight, which he could also not use, so that he then ended his career.
