Huatabampo is a city in the south of the Mexican state of Sonora and the capital of the Municipio Huatabampo . It is located on the Gulf of California at the mouth of the Río Mayo . It had 30,475 inhabitants at the 2010 census and is 34 kilometers southwest of Navojoa . The name is derived from the Mayo language . Huata means willow and Bampo means water. Many tourists also come to the city, mostly from the USA . The city owns great beaches and spas. Álvaro Obregón is buried in the cemetery in Huatabampo . Huatabampo is also known as the "Land of Generals" because of him and other generals who come from here or are associated with the region, including Álvaro Obregón (1880–1928), José Tiburcio Otero Toledo (1834–1900) and Ignacio Otero Pablos (1896–1970) ".
