Duilio Loi (born April 19, 1929 in Trieste , † January 20, 2008 in Treviso ) was an Italian boxer . He was world and European champion in the light welterweight . His trainer was Aldo Spoldi.

Professional career

Loi's first professional fight was on November 1, 1948 against Nino Frangioni, whom he clearly defeated on points. Before he fought for the European lightweight championship on August 18, 1952, he had a record of 35 wins, two draws and no defeat. Jørgen Johansen then defeated him in his first European championship fight on August 18, 1952. Loi therefore had to contest a few build-up fights again, including against Ernesto Formenti , until he got a rematch against Jørgen Johansen on February 6, 1954, which he then did clearly won on points. In 1956 he defeated the European featherweight champion Fred Galiana from Spain by knockout in the 6th round. He defended his European title until 1958 against strong opponents such as Bruno Visintin , Fortunato Manca and Jacques Herbillon .

In 1959 he switched to the welterweight division and won the European championship against Emilio Marconi in this weight class. He then lost in June 1960 against the then light welterweight world champion Carlos Ortiz just on points. In the rematch on September 1, 1960, he defeated Ortiz and was now both world and European champions. He defended his titles against Maurice Auzel, Christian Christensen and again against Carlos Ortiz. Against Eddie Perkins , however, he only managed a draw. Then he fought some development fights until he faced Eddie Perkins again. He lost this fight in September 1962, but then won the direct rematch and resigned from boxing a month later in January 1963 at the age of 33 as the reigning world and European champion.

Loi became a member of the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2005 .
