Career

Fred Galiana, actually Exuperancio Diaz Galiana, started boxing as a teenager and became a professional boxer after a short amateur period at the age of almost 19. His domicile was Mataro, Cataluña. He boxed in the normal display (left boom), that is, his right hand was the punch hand. With this hand he was extremely powerful, because of the 189 professional fights that he played in his career, he won 154 and 90 of them by knockout

He played his first professional fight on May 17, 1950 in Barcelona , winning on points over his Spanish compatriot Fernando Caballero. On June 18, 1952, he lost to the German champion Rudi Langer in Barcelona on points. As early as December 31, 1952, he boxed in Alicante for the first time for the Spanish featherweight championship. He lost that fight to Jose Hernandez. He got his next title chance again on January 20, 1955. He defeated his opponent Angel Garcia by knockout in the lightweight in the fight for the Spanish championship. On April 27, 1955, he defeated the Belgian Jean Sneyers by Tech in Brussels . KO in the 6th round and thus fought for the right to challenge the reigning European featherweight champion Ray Famechon from France. Before this fight, he defended his Spanish lightweight title on June 11, 1955 in Barcelona with a technical knockout victory in the 10th round over Carmelo Beraza.

The fight for the European featherweight title against Ray Famechon took place on November 3, 1955 in Paris . Fred Galiana won this fight by technical knockout in the 6th round and was the new European champion. At the end of 1955 he was in the US boxing magazine "The Ring" in the world rankings behind the American Sandy Saddler in second place. On May 4, 1956, he defended the European title in Abidjan , Ivory Coast, with a technical knockout victory in the 12th round over the Frenchman Jules Touan . Shortly afterwards he had to give up this title because he could no longer bring the weight limit for the featherweight. In future he boxed only lightweight and towards the end of his career even welterweight.

When trying to achieve a top position in his new weight class in Europe, Fred Galiana failed on June 23, 1956 in the Vigorellibahn in Milan , when he was knocked out in the 6th round by the reigning European champion in this weight class Duilio Loi in front of 15,000 spectators . The attempt to become the Spanish lightweight champion in Barcelona on August 21, 1957 also failed, because he boxed only a draw against defending champion Bobby Ros, which meant that the Spanish champion remained.

After this fight, Fred Galiana went to Argentina for almost two years . He played there on November 17, 1957 in Buenos Aires his first fight against Nestor Savino, which he won on points. He played a total of 22 fights in Argentina in Buenos Aires , Mendoza , Mar del Plata and other venues, of which he won 19, he boxed three times in a draw.

After his return to Spain, he beat Bobby Ros on September 23, 1959 in Madrid over 12 rounds on points and was again the Spanish lightweight champion. Against the same opponent he defended this title on November 4, 1959 in a draw.

In late 1959 and early 1960, Fred Galiana fought three times in Germany . He won twice over Rudi Langer, once on points and once by knockout in the 5th round. He also won over Manfred Neuke by knockout in the 7th round. In 1960 he defended his Spanish championship title with a points win over Manolo Garcia and a knockout victory in the 9th round over Juan Albornoz .

He then switched to welterweight and voluntarily returned the Spanish lightweight championship. He then managed to become Spanish welterweight champion on May 22, 1963 in Madrid after two unsuccessful attempts against Luis Folledo with a knockout victory in the first round over Andres Navarro Morena. He successfully defended this title on September 25, 1963 in Valencia by a technical knockout victory in the 6th round over Francisco Ferri and on September 13, 1964 in Melilla by a knockout victory in the 4th round over Lelo Suarez.

On December 23, 1964 he lost the Spanish welterweight championship in Barcelona by a knockout loss in the 11th round against Carmelo Garcia.

Fred Galiana completed his last fight as a professional boxer on December 23, 1965 in Barcelona, where he came to a knockout victory in the 3rd round over Jesse Jones.

Fred Galiana was also successful as an actor. He had already entered this profession during his active time as a boxer.

After the end of his career, he ran a cafeteria in his hometown of Mataro.
