Gunnar Matthiessen

Gunnar Matthiessen ( September 1, 1939 - April 10, 1996 ) was a German publicist and one of the organizers of the peace movement against the NATO double resolution and co-organizer of the large demonstrations of the peace movement in the Federal Republic of Germany from 1981 to 1983.

Matthiessen, who studied philosophy, sociology and German at the University of Cologne, was a member of the SDS from 1964 until its dissolution , whose Cologne group with its Marxist orientation later became one of the founding groups of the later MSB Spartakus . Together with Herbert Lederer, Enno Bussmann , Hannes Heer (SDS Bonn) and Werner Loch, he was the responsible editor of facit. Socialist Contributions , the organ of the Marxist SDS wing, later the theoretical organ of the MSB Spartacus.

From 1965 to 1968 he was managing director of the Campaign for Democracy and Disarmament in North Rhine-Westphalia . He was jointly responsible for the star march of the opponents of the emergency laws on May 11, 1968 in Bonn . Matthiessen was a founding member and a member of the office of the Committee for Peace, Disarmament and Cooperation in Europe . He was the deputy publishing director of the Pahl-Rugenstein Verlag and long-time managing director of the Martin-Niemöller -Stiftung founded in 1977 .

Matthiessen is the author and co-editor of various books, primarily on peace policy issues, and author of numerous articles (especially in the late 1970s and early 1980s) in the journals for German and international politics .
