Liem Swie King

Liem Swie King ( Chinese  林 水鏡 , Pinyin Lín Shuǐjìng ; born February 28, 1956 in Kudus as Ng Swie King ) is a former Indonesian badminton player from PB Djarum . He was one of the most prominent players in the sport in the late 1970s and 1980s. He belongs to the Chinese minority in Indonesia.

Career

He first drew attention to himself in 1974 when he won bronze at the Asian Games . Two years later he was in the final of the All England Open Badminton Championships , but lost there to Rudy Hartono . In 1977 he lost the final again, this time against Flemming Delfs . The following season, King finally made it to the top when he won the final against Rudy Hartono. In 1979 he returned the favor to Flemming Delfs in the final for the 77 defeat and thus defended his title from the previous year. In 1980 he lost to Prakash Padukone in the final, but turned the tables in 1981 and became All-England Champion for the third time. In 1984 he made it to the final again, this time against Morten Frost from Denmark. However, King lost in three sets.

King participated in all four world championships from 1977 to 1985. At the 1st World Cup in 1977 he surprisingly lost his round of 16 against Thomas Kihlström . In 1980 he fought his way to the finals, but lost there again against Rudy Hartono . In 1983 it was only enough for silver when he lost in the final against compatriot Icuk Sugiarto . In 1985 the old master won bronze again in doubles with Hariamanto Kartono .

In 1976, 1979 and 1984 he won the Thomas Cup with the Indonesian team, and in 1982 he finished second with the team.
