Economy and Transport

The economic importance of this area is expressed in large coal deposits, which are located 25 km southeast of the center of the district and at a distance of only 40–50 km from the Chinese border. The following are of particular importance:

  • the Nariin Suchait deposit with the coal mines of Mongolyn Alt LLC (MAK) and the Mongolian-Chinese joint venture MAK-Qinghua.
  • the Ovoot Tolgoi deposit with the coal mines of SouthGobi Sands LLC, the Mongolian subsidiary of the Canadian company SouthGobi Energy Resources (SGQ), a subsidiary of Ivanhoe Mines.

SouthGobi Energy Resources is preparing another project by 2015 in the Sumber area, 10 miles east of Ovoot Tolgoi.

The coal is transported by truck to the Mongolian border town of Shivee Churen. The Chinese border town of Ceke has been able to continue on the new Linhe – Ceke line since 2010 . The coal then reaches the Chinese steelworks in Jiayuguan and Baotou .
