Wong Peng Soon

Wong Peng Soon , MBE ( Chinese  黃秉璇 , Pinyin Huáng Bǐngxuán ) (born February 17, 1918 in Johor Bahru ; † May 22, 1996 in Singapore ) was a badminton player from Singapore. Wong was one of the most important badminton players between 1940 and 1960.

Career

Wong Peng Soon won the first edition of the World Championship for men's teams , the Thomas Cup , with the Malaysian team in the 1948/49 season .

For the final, he and his seven team- mates Chan Kon Leong , Law Teik Hock , Teoh Seng Khoon , Ooi Teik Hock , Yeoh Teck Chye , Lim Kee Fong , Ong Poh Lim and the non-playing captain Lim Chuan Geok took part in a 25- day cruise to the UK, where the Malays were confronted with a European winter for the first time. In the semifinals against the USA, Wong Peng Soon defeated Martin Mendez in three sets. He lost his second individual in a duel of the best badminton players of the time against Dave Freeman with 4:15 and 1:15. For the final against Denmark, Wong Peng Soon could not compete due to an injury and was replaced by Law Teik Hock.

In 1952 Wong Peng Soon was again a member of the Malaysian Thomas Cup team and contributed two individual victories in the final against the USA to successfully defend the title. Three years later, as a playing captain, he was once again an important support for his team in Malaysia's third success in the Thomas Cup in a row.

Wong Peng Soon was also extremely successful as a single player. In 1950 he became the first Asian to win the All England . In 1951, 1952 and 1955 he was victorious again. He won the Malaysian Open eight times from 1940 to 1953, and he was also successful in Denmark in 1950 in men's singles.
