Ooi Teik Hock

Ooi Teik Hock (born November 13, 1920 - March 21, 1983 ) was a Malaysian badminton player .

Career

Ooi Teik Hock and the Malaysian team won the first edition of the world championship for men's teams , the Thomas Cup , in the 1948/49 season .

For the final, he and his seven teammates Chan Kon Leong , Law Teik Hock , Yeoh Teck Chye , Teoh Seng Khoon , Wong Peng Soon , Lim Kee Fong , Ong Poh Lim and the non-playing captain Lim Chuan Geok took part in a 25- day cruise to the UK, where the Malays were confronted with a European winter for the first time. In the semifinals against the USA, Ooi Teik Hock and his partner Teoh Seng Khoon clearly won against Clinton Stephens and Bobby Williams as well as Dave Freeman and Wynn Rogers in straight sets. In the final against Denmark both won again clearly against Poul Holm and Ib Olesen as well as Jørn Skaarup and Preben Dabelsteen and thus laid the foundation for Malaya's victory in this first edition of the Thomas Cup .

Once in Europe, Malaya's badminton aces took part in other international tournaments and exhibition matches in 1949. Ooi Teck Hock and Teoh Seng Khoon won both the prestigious All England in men's doubles , where they faced Dave Freeman and Wynn Rogers again, and the Denmark Open .

In 1952 Ooi Teik Hock was again a member of the Malaysian Thomas Cup team and contributed a victory against Dick Mitchell in the final against the USA to successfully defend his title. Three years later he was once again an important pillar of his team in Malaysia's third success in the Thomas Cup, where he again contributed two wins to the overall success. In 1958 he was able to win his two doubles against Indonesia, but not prevent the 3-6 defeat.

In his home country, Hock won the Malaysian Open in doubles with Tan Kin Hong in 1947 and 1948 . In the last year he also won the individual. At the US Open in 1954 he won doubles with Ong Poh Lim .
