Ginette Bucaille

Ginette Bucaille (* around 1927 as Ginette Jucker) is a former French tennis player . Her greatest success was her entry into the finals of the International French Championships in 1954.

Career

Ginette Bucaille first appeared at the International French Championships in Paris . In the individual, she was eliminated in the second round against the Italian Annalissa Bossi (3: 6, 2: 6). With her doubles partner Josette Amouretti she reached the quarter-finals, in which both of them lost out to the later American winners Doris Hart and Shirley Fry (2: 6, 1: 6). In the same year 1950, the Frenchwoman reached the third round at Wimbledon .

In 1952 at the International French Championships Bucaille, placed in 6th position, was eliminated in the first round against the British Joy Mottram (0: 6, 3: 6). A year later she reached the quarter-finals in the women's singles in Paris as number 13 on the seed list and was French runner-up behind Suzanne Chatrier . At the end of the year, Bucaille finished third in the French rankings behind Nelly Adamson and Chatrier.

She achieved the greatest success of her career in 1954. Barely a month and a half after her quarter-finals at the Monte Carlo tennis tournament , she moved into the finals of the French International Tennis Championships at the end of May after victories over her compatriots Amouretti and Adamson. There, the 27-year-old housewife met the US defending champion Maureen Connolly, who is eight years her junior . At the beginning of the first movement, Bucaille surprised; Connolly could not bring her own serve, whereupon the Frenchwoman was quickly 2-0 lead. The American cut to 4: 4, Bucaille lost her service game and Connolly won the first set 6: 4. In the second set Connolly won five games in a row before Bucaille was able to score a point on an opposing serve. Connolly finally won the second set 6-1. In the same year Bucaille moved into the third round of the tournament at Wimbledon and was defeated in the final of the Irish Lawn Tennis Championships in Dublin again Connolly (2: 6, 1: 6). With Nelly Adamson as a doubles partner, she reached the final of the International Tennis Tournament in Rome , where they lost out against the British pairing Patricia Ward and E. Watson.

In the following years, Bucaille was unable to build on the finals in Paris. In 1955 she reached the quarter-finals of the International French Championships and was second behind Suzanne Chatrier in the all-French Championships, the Coupe Canet , as in 1953. In February 1956 she and her doubles partner Suzanne Schmitt lost the semi-finals at the French Indoor Championships against the American-British duo Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton . At the Grand Slam tournament in Paris, Bucaille lost again in the third round against the later victorious Gibson. Nevertheless, at the end of the year she finished first in the French classification together with Jacqueline Kermina . In 1957 she moved into the final of the Cannes tournament, in which she had to admit defeat 6: 8 and 2: 6 to Belgian Christiane Mercelis . In the same year she won the Iliffe Trophy as a doubles partner of Suzanne Chatrier against the Britons Patricia Ward and Ann Shilcock (5: 7, 6: 3, 6: 4) and was eliminated at Wimbledon as in the previous year in the second round.

In 1957, 1958 and 1959 Bucaille only reached the second round of the French International Championships. In 1962 she did not get past the first round.
