Marion Jones, daughter of US Senator John P. Jones , won the US tennis championships in 1899 and 1902 . In addition, she was successful in the same championships in mixed doubles in 1901 and in doubles in 1902. At the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900 she won the bronze medal in both singles and mixed competitions. She became the first American woman to win a medal. At Wimbledon , she also became the first non-British woman to compete. She reached the quarterfinals. In 1903 she married the architect Robert D. Farquhar , from whom she divorced a little later. Her sister Georgina Jones also took part in the Olympic Games in 1900.
