Grand Slams 1899

The 23rd edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1899 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road. The field of participants in the All-Comers tournament consisted of 37 players for men and 17 for women.

This year, a new for 1200 was £ built spectators pavilion inaugurated. For the first time a double competition was held among the women, but without giving this the rank of championship.

Men's singles

In the Challenge Round , defending champion Reginald Doherty defeated the challenger Arthur Gore in five sets and won his third title.

Ladies singles

In the women’s category, Blanche Bingley-Hillyard was able to beat last year's winner Charlotte Cooper in the Challenge Round and win her fifth title.

Men's doubles

The Doherty brothers triumphed again in doubles. In a new edition of last year's Challenge Round, they beat Harold Nisbet and Clarence Hobart 7: 5, 6: 0 and 6: 2.
