The third edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1879 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club . From a total of 45 participants, 36 took part for the first time. Since last year's winner Frank Hadow had returned to Ceylon and did not defend his title, no Challenge Round was held. The final of the All-Comers competition was watched by around 1,100 spectators.
Men's singles
The Irish Vere Thomas Goold appeared for the only time at Wimbledon and reached the All-Comers final. There he was defeated in three sets by Pastor John Hartley . Goold, who is said to have been hungover on the final day , was convicted of murder in 1907 and died in exile on Devil's Island in French Guiana .
