Grand Slams 1881

The fifth Wimbledon Championships took place in 1881 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club . William Renshaw defeated last year's winner John Hartley in the Challenge Round . He was to win the tournament six more times by 1889.

In addition to a powerful serve led William and his twin brother Ernest Renshaw to Smash (then Renshaw Smash called) as a new blow.

Men's singles

William Renshaw won the tournament, defeating defending champion John Hartley in the shortest Wimbledon final of all time in just 37 minutes 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1. Hartley was weakened by diarrhea.
