Grand Slams 1954 | |
|
The 68th edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1954 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Church Road.
This year special boxes were set up in which spectators could leave unneeded, valid tickets. These were then resold for one shilling . This system still exists today, with the tickets mostly being donated to charities.
Men's singles
In the final, the 33-year-old Jaroslav Drobný beat the only 19-year-old Ken Rosewall in four sets. Rosewall won all Grand Slam tournaments except for the Wimbledon tournament, although he was in the final there in 1974 at the age of 39.
Ladies singles
Maureen Connolly won the women's race for the third time in a row. Two weeks after her victory, however, Connolly suffered a serious riding accident that brought her tennis career to an abrupt end.
Men's doubles
In the men's doubles, two Australians were again successful with Rex Hartwig and Mervyn Rose .
Ladies doubles
Louise Brough and Margaret Osborne duPont won the women's doubles . The two had already been able to secure the title at Wimbledon from 1947 to 1950.
Mixed
In mixed, Doris Hart and Vic Seixas defended their previous year's title.
