Grand Slams 1896

The 20th edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1896 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road. With 31 players, more registered with the men than since 1881. After many players did not play their games in the first or second round of the tournament last year, a badge of honor was introduced, which was awarded to players after a defeat in one of these rounds.

Men's singles

After beating Wilberforce Vaughan Eaves in the All-Comers final, Harold Mahony also won the Challenge Round against last year's winner Wilfred Baddeley . It was Mahony's only Wimbledon title.

Ladies singles

In the women's category, Charlotte Cooper defended her Challenge Round title against Alice Pickering in straight sets.

Men's doubles

The brothers Wilfred and Herbert Baddeley won their fourth and final double title. In the Challenge Round they caught up with Reginald Doherty and Harold Nisbet a 2-0 set deficit and finally won with 1: 6, 3: 6, 6: 4, 6: 1 and 6: 1.
