The seventh edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1883 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road. The defending champion William Renshaw was able to win the tournament for the third time in a row. The field of participants included the defending champion and 22 players.
Men's singles
In the All-Comers competition, the strongest players - alongside William Renshaw - Ernest Renshaw and Herbert Lawford , met in the first round ; a seeding list was still unknown at the time. After Lawford already led 5-0 in the decisive fifth set, Renshaw hit from below with cut balls. His serves were blown by a strong wind, so that Lawford hit many balls out. Lawford won the set, and with it the game, 6-5.
In the All-Comers final, Ernest Renshaw defeated Englishman Donald Charles Stewart in four sets. The Challenge Round was able to win against his twin brother Ernest in a re-edition of the previous year.
