The twelfth Wimbledon Championships took place in 1888 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road. The start of the tournament had to be postponed by three days due to continuous rain that had completely soaked the ground.
Men's singles
The multiple winner William Renshaw , who had paused the previous year because of a tennis elbow, competed again. However, he was eliminated in the quarterfinals against Willoughby Hamilton , where the poor turf conditions should have played a role. His brother Ernest Renshaw , however, got his only title by defeating Herbert Lawford in three sets in the Challenge Round .
Ladies singles
In the women's Challenge Round , Charlotte Dod again prevailed against Blanche Bingley .
Men's doubles
William and Ernest Renshaw won their fourth double title, defeating last year's winners Herbert Wilberforce and Patrick Bowes-Lyon 2: 6, 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 4 and 6: 3 in the final.
