Herbert Wilberforce

Herbert William Wrangham Wilberforce (born February 8, 1864 in Munich , † March 28, 1941 in London ) was a British tennis player .

Life

Wilberforce participated in the Wimbledon Championships from 1882 to 1891 . In the individual, he achieved his best result there in 1886 when he made it to the semi-finals. The following year he won the doubles title alongside Patrick Bowes-Lyon . They defeated James Herbert Crispe and E. Barratt-Smith in three sets 7: 5, 6: 3 and 6: 2. He also won in 1882 at the Sussex Championships and the Northern Association Championships and in 1887 at the Championships in Darlington . In 1895 he reached the final of the doubles tournament at Wimbledon again, this time alongside Ernest Lewis . However, the two had to admit defeat to the brothers Wilfred and Herbert Baddeley in four sets.

Wilberforce was chairman of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club from 1929 to 1936 . He died in Kensington, London in 1941 at the age of 77 .
