Grand Slams 1885

The ninth edition of the Wimbledon Championships took place in 1885 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on Worple Road.

A new feature was introduced in the preparation of the tournament schedule. While byes were distributed to the various rounds up to the semi-finals in earlier years , a system proposed by RB Bagnall Wild as early as 1883 was used, after byes could only occur in the first round. To do this, the field of participants was filled with byes up to the next power of two.

Men's singles

In addition to defending champion William Renshaw, 23 players competed in the All-Comers competition for men . The All-Comers finale won Herbert Lawford against Ernest Renshaw . In the Challenge Round , however, Lawford lost to William Renshaw in five sets, who was able to celebrate his fifth title in a row. In the Challenge Round, a new attendance record was set with around 3,500 spectators.

At a game played by Ernest de HH Browne , one of the most successful players of the year, controversy erupted after Browne hit the referee's foot and the ball hit the opposing field. The umpire's chair was then positioned further away from the net.

Ladies singles

The field of participants in the women's singles, which this year was held without the Challenge Round , comprised ten players. In the final, last year's winner Maud Watson was able to defend her title in two sets against Blanche Bingley .

Men's doubles

In the double final, the Renshaw brothers won again against Claude Ferrer and Arthur Stanley 6: 3, 6: 3 and 10: 8.
