Grand Slams 1880

The fourth Wimbledon Championships took place in July 1880 on the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club . With a total of 60 players, a record participation was recorded that could not be beaten until 1904. The admission price for spectators, previously one shilling , was increased to half a crown in the last 10 days of the tournament .

At the final, the Challenge Round , around 1,300 spectators were present.

The rules were revised again: If a service touched the edge of the net and then fell into the service area, it could be repeated. The players were not allowed to touch the net with the racket or hit the ball before it crossed the net. Before the match, a player could request that a change of sides take place after each game. The height of the net on the posts has been lowered to four feet . The service line was moved closer to the net to 21 feet, giving the service fields their current size. The weight of the ball was also determined.

Men's singles

Last year's winner John Hartley was able to defend his title against Herbert Lawford . Lawford had earlier in the All-Comers finale Otway Edward Woodhouse beaten.
