Half crown

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Half Crown (half a crown) was the English name for the coin to 2½ Shilling , which corresponded to the eighth of a pound .

The first half-crowns were made in 1549 under the reign of Edward VI. embossed. It was not until 1893 that the coins bore the Half Crown denomination . The coin weighed 14.138 g. Their fineness was initially 925/1000, from 1920 only 500/1000. In 1947 the silver coin was replaced by a cupronickel coin . The last half crowns were minted in 1967. With a value of 12.5 new pence , they did not correspond to any of the coins introduced in the decimal system in 1971 and were therefore withdrawn from circulation a year before the changeover.
