Jazz - The magazine that still exists

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jazz - The magazine that still exists was a Swiss magazine for jazz music that appeared in the mid-1980s.

The magazine Jazz - The magazine that still exists was published in the 1980s by Onorio Mansutti and Hans-Peter Fahrni; Jeff Sommer and Onorio Mansutti were responsible for the editing and layout. The magazine was published from 1982 to 1985 by the Basler Werbag-Verlag AG. Each booklet was around 60 pages long. Due to the high costs, which could hardly be covered by the sale, as well as the enormous personal effort for the two editors, production was finally stopped at the end of 1985.

The layout was remarkable: the individual issues were made in large format of approx. 41 cm x 28 cm. The photos and texts were almost exclusively bichrome - usually black and white. In contrast, the cover design for individual issues is multicolored. There were two different versions of each issue: One for sale at kiosks and tobacconists. These sales copies were laid out folded in the middle due to their comparatively huge size and consisted of a more newspaper-like paper. The cover design differed in color from the subscription copies. The subscription copies were sent unfolded and had a different, slightly thicker paper.

The magazine appeared up to six issues a year; the texts were in German and English. The 1/83 issue dealt with Anthony Braxton , Max Gordon , Hans Reichel , Brion Gysin , Cecil Taylor , Keith Jarrett and Christy Doran ; 5/83 was dedicated to women in jazz such as Carla Bley , Beryl Bryden , Diamanda Galás , Abbey Lincoln and Jeanne Lee . Issue 1/84 dealt u. a. with jazz made in Japan . In 1985 a Miles Davis Special was published. Authors were u. a. 1986 Guido Bachmann , Bert Noglik , Karl Lippegaus , Peter Niklas Wilson and Howard Mandel .

Today, despite its relatively short-lived nature, this magazine is still popular with collectors due to its unique format, which also allowed photos to be reproduced in a respectable size.
