Howard Almond

Howard Mandel (* in Chicago ) is an American music journalist, non-fiction author, radio presenter and university lecturer.

Mandel grew up in Chicago and was interested in jazz in his youth, but also writes about other contemporary music styles (Motown, avant-garde, rock, blues, musicals). He was particularly influenced by the activities of the AACM in Chicago. He studied at Syracuse University and began as a music critic in 1973 with the Chicago Daily Tribune (which was lost in 1978). He wrote u. a. for Jazziz, Down Beat (since 1978, then as Associate Editor), Billboard , Guitar World, Ear, Village Voice , The Wire, Swing Journal and has authored two books on jazz to date. He has given lectures at various universities such as New York University and the New School (also in New York) and the Thelonious Monk Institute, but also abroad such as on behalf of the US State Department in Armenia and Kiev . He also wrote many liner notes and moderated radio programs, for example during his time in Chicago for WBEZ-FM ("Jazz Chicago") and later for National Public Radio (NPR) and others. a. the “Improvised Unlimited” series.

Mandel has been president of the Jazz Journalists Association (JJA) since 1993 , which he co-founded in Chicago in 1986; he acts as a public speaker and organizes the annual JJA Jazz Awards. Almond lives in New York.
