NGC 4608 is an 11 mag bright lenticular galaxy of the Hubble type SB0 in the constellation Virgo on the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 80 million light years from the Milky Way and about 80,000 light years in diameter . Presumably it forms a gravitationally bound galaxy pair together with NGC 4596 . She is listed as a member of the Virgo galaxy cluster under catalog number VCC 1869 .
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies IC 3633 , IC 3634 , IC 3638 , IC 3647 .
The object was discovered on March 15, 1784 by Wilhelm Herschel with an 18.7-inch reflector telescope, who described it as "pB pL R mbM r".
