IC 3638 is a spiral galaxy of Hubble type Sbc in the constellation Virgo to the ecliptic . It is estimated to be 286 million light years from the Milky Way and about 20,000 light years across. It is listed as a member of the Virgo Galaxy Cluster under catalog number VCC 1830 , but is too far away for that.
In the same area of the sky are u. a. the galaxies NGC 4596 , NGC 4608 , IC 3608 , IC 3647 .
The object was discovered by Royal Harwood Frost on May 10, 1904 .
