Kamari ( Greek Καμάρι ( n. Sg. )) Is a coastal town in the municipality of Thira on the Greek Cycladic island of Santorini . The village, which had 1,648 inhabitants in 2011, is located on the east coast of the main island of Thira, not far from the airport . Kamari is the largest seaside resort on the island with a volcanic pebble / sand beach that is about 10 to 15 meters wide and 1200 meters long .
Kamari is a very young place by Santorinian standards, which was only founded after the earthquake of 1956 by the inhabitants of the destroyed village of Mesa Gonia. The name Kamari comes from vaults ( kamara 'vaults') - originally probably tomb antechambers - from Roman times. These are located near the excavations of Ancient Thera in the rocky ridge Mesa Vouno at the southern tip of the village.
There are numerous hotels, pensions, shops, taverns, restaurants, a supermarket and a cinema in the village. The beach is lined with a busy, car-free promenade. The island's capital, Fira, can be reached from the bus stop right on the beach . From here it is very easy to get to all other places on the island via the star-shaped bus network.
The archaeological site of Alt-Thera can be reached on foot, by donkey or car via the cobbled serpentine road.
