Because of his preliminary work, the favorite of this race was Helmut Körnig. In the quarter-finals he equaled the Olympic record with 21.6 s and beat the 100-meter Olympic champion Percy Williams. In the preliminary round, Körnig defeated the Olympic champion of 1924 , Jackson Scholz, in 21.8 s . In the final, Scholz started the race quickly. After half of the course, Körnig was in front, but cramped a little on the home straight and so Williams and Walter Rangeley were able to overtake him. Percy Williams had won his second gold medal at these games. At first there was no decision about the bronze medal, Körnig and Scholz crossed the finish line almost tied. The referees decided on a dead race, both runners should compete against each other again. Scholz withdrew and left Körnig with the bronze medal. Later film analyzes showed that this decision was correct.
After his victory over the 100 meters two days earlier, Percy Williams became the first sprint double Olympic champion not from the USA.
Helmut Körnig managed to win the first German medal over 200 meters .
For the first time the US team remained in this discipline without winning a medal.
