William Herbert (botanist)

William Herbert (born January 12, 1778 in Highclere Castle , Hampshire , † May 28, 1847 in London ) was a British botanist, poet, clergyman and member of Parliament. As its botanical author abbreviation “ Herb. “Used.

Life

Herbert was the youngest son of Henry Herbert, 1st Earl of Carnarvon .

Herbert studied at Exeter College , Oxford . From 1806 to 1807 he was MP for Hampshire and from 1811 to 1812 MP for Cricklade in the House of Commons in London. In 1840 he became dean of Manchester Cathedral (Dean of Manchester).

Scientific work

Herbert reclassified the Hippeastrum , which until then belonged to the Amaryllis , as a separate genus and gave them this name in 1837. He also bred a large number of Hippeastrum and Crinum hybrids.

Herbert corresponded with Charles Darwin and his findings about hybridization flowed into " The Origin of Species ".

Honors

The International Bulb Society awards the Herbert Medal for services in work with and research for the species of the flower bulb family.

The plant genus Herbertia Sweet from the Iris family (Iridaceae) is named after Herbert .
