Stubbornness called pejoratively the mind of a person of intransigence, stubbornness , bigotry or mental Un agility and prejudice is embossed. The swear words Dickkopf , Dickschädel , Pedant, Sturkopf , (Austrian also Plutzer ) or (outdated) Rigid head have a similar meaning .

etymology

Johann Christoph Adelung's grammatical-critical dictionary defined rigidity in 1801 as “a rigid mind, an inflexible frame of mind, since one stubbornly withstands all reasons”, derived from the adjective rigid “to a high degree rigid and inflexible”. In Hamburg also “ sturdy , strong and rigid in Swedish […]. It is closely related to stubborn , and as is evident from the doubled r , an intensive from an outdated star , from which it is also strongly derived. Formerly, rag was also customary in Upper German for rigid , which apparently belongs to the family of Lat. rigidus . "

Old age stubbornness

The term stubbornness is particularly common in connection with older people, for which the term "old age stubbornness" is often used. This is often accompanied by the assumption that this is a pathological condition (in the sense of mental illness ), a symptom of the onset of dementia . To this end, the Bavarian Supreme Regional Court ruled that old age stubbornness does not in itself constitute a mental illness or mental or emotional disability that would require the involvement of a guardian or a supervisor.

The psychologist Clemens Tesch-Römer , director of the German Center for Aging in Berlin, describes the manifestation as being dependent on the individual's attitude to life. A restriction of mental flexibility is not a question of age, but rather the " openness to experience depends largely on a person's résumé". The ability of crystalline intelligence would correspond to the potential to accumulate and use knowledge and experience. “This ability allows politicians, writers and other productive and creative people to achieve top performances even in old age” and is relatively constant into old age.
