José Villalonga Llorente (born December 12, 1919 in Córdoba , † August 8, 1973 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football coach . He coached the Spanish national team from 1962 to 1966, with which he became European champion in 1964.

Career

Villalonga was one of the most successful football coaches in Spain. In the middle of the 1954/55 season he took over responsibility for Real Madrid and formed the wonder team of the 1950s around players like Alfredo Di Stéfano , Francisco Gento , Ferenc Puskás and Raymond Kopa . At the age of 36, he won the first European championship in 1956 , making him the youngest coach to have succeeded to this day. Overall, he won this Cup twice with Real Madrid.

In 1959 he came to local rivals Atlético Madrid . With Atlético he was not Spanish champions, but he defeated his old club twice in the Spanish cup finals (1960 and 1961). In 1962 he won the European Cup Winners' Cup with Atlético in the final against Fiorentina .

After these successes he was appointed Spanish national coach in 1962. With the Spanish national soccer team he achieved the first major success of Spain in previous soccer history. He won the European Football Championship in 1964 and thus Spain's only title until 2008. As reigning European champion, he then led Spain to the 1966 World Cup in England , but retired early in the preliminary round after defeats against Germany and Argentina . After this tournament he resigned from his national coaching post.
