Fernando Olivella Pons (born June 22, 1936 in Barcelona ) is a former Spanish football player . The defender, who spent his entire professional career at FC Barcelona , won the European Championship in 1964 as captain of the Spanish national team .
Club career
Olivella joined the FC Barcelona second team, SD España Industrial , in 1954 from the youth team of FC Barcelona . After two years he rose to the first team. He established himself straight away as a regular player and was used 42 times in his first season.
From 1963/64 Olivella played as a central defender, previously he was mainly set up as a full-back. In 1964 he was named captain of FC Barcelona and from then on, until his retirement in 1969, he led the team as captain on the pitch.
In total, he played 500 games for FC Barcelona, including friendlies, and scored one goal. His only goal was the 6-0 in the meantime in the 8-0 win against UD Las Palmas on the 22nd matchday of the 1959/60 season. With Barça he won the Spanish championship in 1959 and 1960 . He also won the trade fair cup three times and the Spanish cup four times .
National team career
Olivella played his first game for the Spanish national team in a 5-0 win over Belgium on March 31, 1957 . In 1964 he led Spain as captain to win the European Championship . Olivella played in both games of the finals against Hungary and the USSR . Two years later he took part in the 1966 World Cup with Spain , but was not used in the disappointing elimination in the preliminary round. Olivella made a total of 18 international matches for Spain.
In addition, he played two games for the Catalan football team between 1966 and 1968 .
