location

The Augsburg city forest is an elongated area in the north-south direction in the districts of Augsburg, Haunstetten , Hochzoll , Merching and Meringer Au . It begins in the north in the Spickel-Herrenbach area . Its eastern border follows the curved course of the Lech . In the western area it runs along the Augsburg zoo and the botanical garden . Its western boundary marks the former town of Haunstetten and in the south it extends to the weir of the Mandicho lake east of the town of Königsbrunn . In the Augsburg urban area, the forest is also known as the Siebentischwald ; from the Haunstetten area onwards, it is referred to as the Haunstetter forest. It also includes Siebenbrunn , part of the Haunstetten-Siebenbrunn district , a settlement in the middle of the city forest.

The city forest as a nature reserve

The Augsburg city forest is Bavaria's largest contiguous alluvial forest with some remarkable flora and fauna . The forest area was created on the pre-alpine river landscape of the Lech. The Lech gravel that was washed up during the Ice Age forms the subsoil. The forest offers a mosaic of the most varied individual living spaces of almost all succession stages from the willow meadow to the pine heather forest to the mixed deciduous forest. It is also interrupted by numerous smaller and larger dry grasses and burns , such as the Schießplatzheide , and is traversed by many auburns. The flora in particular has special features to offer, numerous "immigrants" used the Lech as a biotope bridge and were able to move in from alpine or even southern Mediterranean regions. These include, for example, four rare species of Ragwurzen , many orchids and gentians . There has been a grazing project with Przewalski horses in the Augsburg city forest since 2007 , which is intended to clear the pine forest.

The city forest as a leisure area

The city forest has a network of paths. Several of these paths are paved former traffic roads that have been closed to motorized traffic. Signposts with kilometers are distributed over the entire area and refer to all parts of the city and neighboring communities. The network of trails is used by recreational athletes such as cyclists and joggers. Sports competitions such as the Kuhsee Triathlon take place in the summer months. The Augsburg Botanical Garden and the Augsburg Zoo are located on the outer borders of the urban forest area.

Waters

The forest area is traversed by the Lech and includes the Kuhsee , in addition to this there is also the smaller Stempflesee . The brooks Brunnenbach , Siebenbrunner Bach, Reichskanal and the Lechkanal Lochbach flow through the city forest. These branch out into other small streams to reunite shortly before the city center.
