The Order of the Immaculate Conception ( lat. : Ordo de Conceptione Immaculata Beatae Mariae Virginis , religious symbol : OConc ) or Conceptionist is a religious order in the Roman Catholic Church . He was born in 1484 by St. Beatrix da Silva Meneses (1424–1490) founded in Toledo .

history

After Beatrix had lived with the Dominican Sisters for almost 40 years but had not taken any religious vows , she left the monastery in 1484 and settled in Toledo . Here she founded the first convent of the Order of the Immaculate Conception . From the Latin conceptio , meaning conception , the denomination of the order conceptionists was derived.

The rule of the order , presumably worked out by Beatrix, was explicitly not recognized by Pope Innocent VIII in the papal bull Inter universa of April 30, 1489 . Beatrix was made to adopt the order rule of an already approved congregation . Thereupon the conceptionists adopted the order rule of the Cistercian women . After the death of Beatrix (1490) the religious order was affiliated to the Franciscans . With the intervention of the Archbishop of Toledo , Gonzalo Cardinal Jiménez de Cisneros , under whose jurisdiction the nuns stood, Pope Julius II approved Beatrix's first draft rule. Papal approbation took place on September 17, 1511 with the bull Ad statum prosperum .

development

The Order of the Conceptionists spread mainly in Spain and the Spanish-speaking countries of South America ; that is where their focus is still today. Today the religious community has around 2000 nuns in 160 monasteries. This also includes the 19 monasteries in Spain, which were built in 1957 by the "Federation of Beatriz de Silva". The parent company is based in Toledo. The conceptionists had also been based in Peru since 1747 , where they were looked after by the Franciscans. In addition, the Order was of great importance in South America for the evangelization of other countries such as Argentina , Brazil , Ecuador , Colombia and Mexico . There are also branches in Equatorial Guinea and India .

Habit

A white tunic and a white scapular with a sky-blue choir coat belong to the habit of the conceptionists . On the scapular and the choir mantle there is an emblem with a representation of the Virgin Mary . The conceptionists wear the Franciscan cord with the three knots as a zingulum .

Missionary Sisters

At the instigation of and under the protection of the missionary bishop Amadeus Bahlmann OFM, four conceptionists founded the religious order of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Mother of God in Brazil in 1910 (abbreviation: SMIC and also known under the name Wilkingheger Missionsschwestern ).
