St. Beatrix da Silva Meneses

Beatrix da Silva Meneses also (Portuguese) Beatriz da Silva (* around 1424 in Ceuta or Campo Maior , † around 1490 in Toledo ) was a Portuguese noblewoman , lady in waiting for Queen Isabella , the second wife of John II of Castile, religious woman and founder of the order . She is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Beatrix da Silva Meneses was possibly born around 1424 in Ceuta, then in possession of the Portuguese crown. Her father was the knight Rui Gomes da Silva, alkali of the border town of Campo Maior . Her mother was Isabel de Meneses, the illegitimate daughter of Pedro de Meneses (1370-1437), the Count of Viana do Alentejo and Vila Real , who was also governor of Ceuta. The couple had twelve children, including Beatrice. Both families, the da Silva and the de Meneses', belonged to the nobility and were linked to the royal families of Portugal (with King Sancho I , the colonist 1154-1211) and Castile .

Raised for a life at court, Beatrix became lady-in-waiting to Isabella of Portugal , the daughter of Infante João . When Isabella left for the Castilian court to marry Juan II of Castile , she took Beatrix, her cousin, with her as a lady-in-waiting. Isabella was the mother of Isabella I of Castile , who was born to Pope Alexander VI. on December 19, 1496 the honorary title "Catholic Queen" was awarded. In addition, the process of canonization of Queen Isabella of Castile has been suspended since 1990.

At the age of 21 Beatrix became a lady-in-waiting . Later she distributed all her possessions (she had originally been very rich) to the poor and retired to a Dominican convent near Toledo, where she lived as a monastery for almost 30 years without, however, professing . In 1484 she founded the Order of the Immaculate Conception in Toledo , a contemplative order that is now widespread in Spain, Portugal, the United States, Italy and other countries. During the founding phase of the Order of Conceptionists, which she founded in Toledo, she fell seriously ill and was only able to make her profession in articulo mortis on her deathbed. She died between 1490 and 1492. The exact date of death seems unknown.
