Life

Pandžić's childhood home in Drinovci ( )

Bazilije Pandžić was born in Drinovci in the Ljubuški district in the Herzegovina region in 1918 , when it was still part of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy . In 1929 he finished primary school in his birthplace, in 1938 the grammar school in Široki Brijeg and entered the novitiate of the Franciscan Order (OFM) in Humac. During this time he began studying philosophy and theology in Mostar and was ordained a priest in 1941. He originally wanted to continue his studies in Freiburg im Breisgau , but his visa application for the German Reich was rejected in the war year 1941. In 1942 he therefore continued his studies in Rome and obtained his licentiate in theology in 1943 . At the Antonianum Pontifical University , he received his doctorate in theology in 1945 with a thesis on the history of the Diocese of Trebinje-Mrkan. At the same time, he studied archival science , paleography and diplomatics at the Vatican School of Paleography, Diplomatics and Archival Studies , which is connected to the Vatican archives, and earned the title paleographus et archivarius . He received his doctorate in philosophy on January 9, 1951 at the Department of Islamic Studies ( Arabic , Persian and Turkish ) at the Roman University of La Sapienza .

Pandžić planned to research the history of Bosnia , Herzegovina, Dalmatia and Dubrovnik in the Ottoman archives in Istanbul . In 1947, however, he was appointed archivist general and annals writer of the Franciscan Order (OFM) in Rome, a position he held until 1985. In this function he took part in international conferences in Paris , Moscow , Florence and other cities and published in various specialist journals. In addition, he was also elected to administrative functions in various professional associations. In his book Archivistica ecclesiastica , published by the Vatican Archives in 1967, he summarized his experience as an archivist. He devoted almost his entire professional life to researching historical sources from the various Vatican archives. He published over twenty scientific books and several hundred scientific articles and contributions in specialist journals. He published mainly in Latin , Croatian and Italian , occasionally also in English , French , German and Spanish . His works appeared in different countries ( Vatican , Italy , Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Spain , Argentina , USA , Germany , France , Switzerland , Austria and Poland ).

On the general history of the Franciscan Order, Pandžić published two folio volumes in the Annales Minorum series , which in the narrower sense is a continuation of the source collection library that the Irish Franciscan Father Lucas Wadding had started in the 17th century. In 1974 he was responsible for the fourth volume, Regiones Proximi Orientis et Paeninsulae Balcanicae , for the study of mission history within the series Historia missionum Ordinis Fratrum Minorum .

As an expert in the Congregation for Canonization, he served under several popes . As part of this activity, Pandžić published three so-called “positions” (Latin: positiones ), that is, historical-critical editions of the sources of the life and work of people that were to be canonized. He wrote his first position in 1961 about Nikola Tavelić , which on June 21, 1970 for the canonization of Nicolaus Tavelić by Pope Paul VI. led. In a further position from 1970 he brought out critical source material about the life of Beatrice de Silva (of Spanish origin). The third position concerned the German Franciscan Liberat Weiß and his companions in 1983 .

Bazilije Pandžić was one of the founders and editors of the ZIRAL publishing house in 1970, which was based in Rome, Zurich and Chicago. The publisher published around 70 specialist books in exile before moving to Zagreb and Mostar in 1991. In addition, Pandžić was a co-founder of the Croatian Historical Institute in Rome. In exile in Rome he also wrote numerous articles for the American Croatian magazines published in Chicago . After returning home, he took part in various scientific conferences and contributed to various scientific journals with specialist articles. Since 1995 he lived in Zagreb, where he continued his scientific research. Most recently, he published several works, including the three-volume Acta Franciscana Hercegovinae in 2003 and 2009, as well as The Franciscans in Herzegovina in 2001. His collected scientific work comprises around 10,000 pages, including 24 monographs . After the publication of the collected works of Bazilije Stjepan Pandžić in 2010, he published two more books: the second, expanded edition of the work The Franciscans in Herzegovina and a book with fundamental theological considerations with the title Ususret Bogu (English Towards God ).

Pandžić lived in Zagreb until 2016 ; most recently he lived in the Franciscan monastery Humac ( ) near Ljubuški . On his 100th birthday on January 30, 2018, the Philosophical Faculty in Mostar published a commemorative publication with international contributions. The Croatian department of the Post of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Mostar also issued a special postage stamp for the occasion .

Remarks

  1. Pandžić's place of birth Drinovci is now part of the municipality of Grude . Today the community is in Bosnia and Herzegovina, right on the border with Croatia.
  2. The publishing house ZIRAL had to act out of exile, as independent authors and the Croatian language were suppressed during the communist Yugoslav rule. The publishing house provided a platform for critical authors.
  3. In Bosnia and Herzegovina there are three postal companies that work together: a Croatian post in Mostar , a Serbian post in Banja Luka and a Bosnian post in Sarajevo (as of January 2018).
