On January 22, 1588, Pope Sixtus V created the Sacred Congregation for Rites with the Apostolic Constitution Immensa Aeterni Dei , whose tasks included the implementation of canonization processes. Pope Paul VI dissolved it in 1969 with the apostolic constitution Sacra Rituum Congregatio and entrusted the execution of canonization processes to the Congregation for the Causes of Saints ( Latin Congregatio de Causis Sanctorum ).
