Stephan of Muret
Stephan von Muret (French: Étienne de Muret), also called Stephan von Thiers or Stephan von Grandmont (Latinized Stephanus de Mureto, Stephanus Thiernensis or Stephanus Grandimontensis), (* probably 1044 ; † 8 February 1124 ) was a French monk of the 11th Century and the founder of a monastic community from which later the order of Grandmont emerged . He was canonized in 1189 and his feast day is February 8th.
As the younger son of Étienne II, Vicomte de Thiers, from the Thiern family , he probably settled as a hermit near Ambazac (20 kilometers north of Limoges ) around 1076 . In the area known as Muret, other hermits gathered, who only moved to nearby Grandmont after his death due to a vision and kept his relics in the local church.
