José María Rubio

José María Rubio y Peralta SJ (born July 22, 1864 in Dalías , Spain, † May 2, 1929 in Aranjuez , Spain) was a Spanish Jesuit and priest . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Life

José María Rubio y Peralta, who came from a peasant family, was ordained a priest in 1887 and was appointed professor at the seminary in Madrid in 1890 . After a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he joined the Jesuit Order in 1906. As a popular preacher and confessor, he worked successfully from the center of the order in Madrid. José María Rubio y Peralta took special care of the poor, the sick and the disabled, and he also organized retreats and missions for the poor. During his lifetime he was called an Apostle of Madrid .

José María Rubio by Pope John Paul II. On Oct. 6, 1985 beatified and on May 4, 2003 canonized . His feast day in the liturgy is May 2nd .
