Luigi Guanella
Luigi Guanella , also Aloisius Guanella , (born October 9, 1842 in Campodolcino , † October 24, 1915 in Como ) was an Italian priest and founder of the order . He is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .
Life
Guanella entered a boys' seminary for prospective priests at the age of twelve and was ordained priest in 1866 . With Johannes Don Bosco , with whom he was friends, he built so-called “Houses of Divine Providence” in Como and other places in 1866, in which physically and mentally handicapped people were cared for.
Foundations
Don Guanella is the founder of the Congregations of the “Daughters of Mary of Providence” ( Figlie di Santa Maria della Divina Provvidenza , FSMP) and the male"Servant of charity" ( Servi della Carità , order abbreviation SdC; Latin Congregatio Servorum a Charitate ), usually named after its founderGuanellians (or also “Work of Don Guanella”), a congregation of priests. Both religious orders are active in charities. None of the communities has branches in the German-speaking area.
Guanella also founded the Brotherhood of the Death of St. Joseph , of which Pope Pius X was the first to be registered. The brotherhood was recognized by the church on February 17, 1913 and raised to the status of arch brotherhood, that is, it was also allowed to establish daughter brotherhoods. This worldwide prayer community for the dying is cared for in Germany by the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Saint Marc, which has its seat in the St. Trudpert Monastery .
Adoration
Pope Paul VI beatified Luigi Guanella in 1964 . In the consistory on February 21, 2011, the College of Cardinals confirmed the completion of the canonization process for Luigi Guanella. On October 23, 2011, Guanella was founded by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized.
