Rafaela Porras y Ayllón , religious name Rafaela Maria des Herzens Jesu (born March 1, 1850 in Pedro Abad , Spain , † January 6, 1925 in Rome , Italy ) was a Spanish nun and founder of the Servants of the Sacred Heart of Jesus A.CI ( es . : Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, it . : Ancelle del Sacro Cuore di Gesú). She was canonized by the Catholic Church in 1977 .

Life

Rafaela Porras y Aylón came from a middle-class family. At an early age she felt called to the spiritual life. In 1874 she moved into a Poor Clare convent to reflect on her calling. Finally she joined the congregation of the Hermanas reparatrices de María ( Latin : Institutum a Maria Reparatrice ) in Seville , a young foundation from France by the Blessed Emilie d'Oultremont . Her novitiate began on June 4, 1874 and was given the religious name Rafaela Maria of the Heart of Jesus. A year later, Rafaela was appointed superior by the Bishop of Córdoba. She got into a dispute with the diocese leadership when they wanted to change the constitution. Therefore, in 1877, she moved with several novices to Madrid, where they use the Cardinal - Archbishop of Toledo , Juan Ignacio Moreno y Maisanove that Esclavas del Sagrado Corazón de Jesús founded. The hallmarks of the new congregation were the special veneration of the heart of Jesus and the constant adoration of the sacrament of the altar . In active life, the sisters devoted themselves to catechesis , education, etc. The Congregation was approved by the Holy See on January 29, 1887 . On November 4, 1888, Sr. Rafaela made her perpetual profession . In 1893 she was deposed as superior by the other nuns and lived as a simple sister for 32 years. Pope Pius XII beatified her on May 18, 1952 ; Pope Paul VI canonized them on January 13, 1977. Her memorial day in the liturgy is January 6th. Her relic is in the Church of the Congregation in Rome.
