Rosa Venerini

Rosa Venerini (born February 9, 1656 in Viterbo , † May 7, 1728 in Rome ) was a Catholic nun and saint.

She opened Italy's first public girls' school in 1685 and founded the Maestre Pie Venerini community ("Pious Teaching Sisters Venerini"), which was committed to ( Jesuit ) schooling. The aim was a holistic religious education for the girls. Together with Lucia Filippini she started other schools and was involved in the founding of the Congregation Maestre Pie Filippini ("Pious Teaching Sisters Filippini").

In the year she died there were already 40 schools, today (2018) around 700 sisters work in over 100 schools in Europe, Asia, Africa and America.

She was on May 4, 1952 by Pope Pius XII. beatified ; on October 15, 2006 she was by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized .
