Giovanni Battista Piamarta FN (born November 26, 1841 in Brescia , Italy , † April 25, 1913 in Remedello ) was an Italian priest of the Roman Catholic Church , educator and founder of the Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth . He was beatified in 1997 . On October 21, 2012 he was received by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized .

Life

Giovanni Battista was the son of Giovanni Piamara and Regina Ferrari and grew up in a poor family. Here he received a Christian education. In 1860 he began his theological training in the episcopal seminary . Despite some difficulties during his studies, he was ordained a priest on December 24, 1855 at the age of 24 .

He took up his first pastor's position in Carzag Reviera, then moved to Bedizzole and then became pastor in the parish of Sain'Alessandro in Brescia. Here his care for the youth began, he offered them a youth home and promoted Christian education. In 13 years he did fruitful work and gained a high reputation among young people. In 1883 he took over the parish in Pavone del Mella. In 1887 he returned to Brescia and became a chaplain in Sain'Alessandro. Here he met the priest Pietro Capretti, with whom he opened the "Instituto Artigianelli" on December 3, 1886. Bishop Corna Maria Pellegrini of Brescia made him director.

Here he met Father Giovanni Bonsignori, with whom he founded an agricultural school in Remedello in 1895 . In this agricultural institute, young Italians who wanted to emigrate to the USA were trained in agriculture.

In 1900 he founded the "Congregation of the Holy Family of Nazareth" in order to consolidate and promote the continuity of his work. He wrote their first rule and received episcopal approval on May 25, 1902. Together with Elisa Baldo he laid the foundation for the foundation of the "Congregation of the humble maidservants of the Lord" ( it . : Umili Serve del Signore).

When he became ill in 1910, Giovanni began to arrange his succession and gave instructions in his will. At the age of 71 he died on April 25, 1913 in the arms of Father Bonsignoris and in the presence of his confreres. He was buried in the Vantiniano cemetery in Brescia. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II on October 12, 1997, and his liturgical feast day was set for April 25, the day of his death. On October 21, 2012 he was appointed by Pope Benedict XVI. canonized .
