Riccardo (Richard) Pampuri OH (born August 2, 1897 in Trivolzio, Lombardy , † May 1, 1930 in Milan ) was an Italian doctor and religious. He has been venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church since 1989 .

childhood

Erminio Filippo Pampuri ( religious name : Riccardo) was born the tenth of eleven children. His parents were Innocente Pampuri and Angela Campari; his mother died when he was three years old, and his father was killed in a traffic accident in 1907. From the age of 10, Erminio Filippo grew up with his maternal grandparents.

Military service and doctor

After graduating from school, Erminio Filippo studied medicine and was drafted into military service in 1917 . He served as a sergeant in field hospitals and was confronted with the suffering and pain of the wounded. After the end of the First World War , he received his doctorate and opened a practice in Morimondo near Milan . Here he treated the homeless and the poor for free. Furthermore, he campaigned for the local youth and supported educational and health measures. He joined the St. Vincent Conference and the Third Order of the Franciscans .

Religious

1927, at the age of 30, he became a friar Ricardo the Brothers of Charity of St. John of God in Brescia . He continued to work there as a doctor and ran a dental clinic for the needy for the religious order .

Adoration

Already during the time as a doctor and clinic director, the religious began to be worshiped. After suffering from tuberculosis , he died at the age of 33. Brother Ricardo was beatified on October 4, 1981 and canonized by Pope John Paul II on November 1, 1989 . His feast day in the Catholic liturgy is May 1st.
