Lodovico Pavoni (born September 11, 1784 in Brescia , Italy ; † April 1, 1849 in Rodengo-Saiano near Brescia) was an Italian priest and the founder of the Roman Catholic "Congregation of the Sons of Maria Immaculata" , the Baboonians (CFMI) . He is venerated as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church .

life and work

Lodovico received his theological training from the Dominican Carlo Domenico Ferrari (later Bishop of Brescia ). In 1807 he was ordained a priest and took over the management of the youth meeting center in Brescia. Since then he has devoted his life and work to caring for young people and raising poor children. In 1812 Bishop Gabrio Nava appointed him his secretary and supported him in his youth work. In 1818 he received approval to found a private charity under episcopal law . In 1821 this institute was named "Institut Sankt Barbara". In 1823 Pavoni opened a school for the deaf and dumb and set up a farm as an agricultural school.

In 1825 he founded a religious community with priests and brothers who made it their task to educate young people and to supervise their training. Pavoni based his holistic upbringing on reason , charity , prevention (promoting learning), the central questions of faith and the importance of work. He published editorials and developed new approaches to education based on people and the value of work. In 1843 Pope Gregory XVI approved the establishment of a religious community ; Pavoni, who had been appointed cathedral vicar in the meantime , founded the "Pavonianer" on October 11, 1847 and made his profession on December 8, 1847 .

In March 1847, during the ten days of unrest in Brescia (the population rebelled against the Austrian occupation), he gave protection to many young people and took them into the monastery near Gussago . Shortly afterwards, on April 1st, 1849, his hometown Brescia was still in flames, he passed away.

Beatification and Canonization

Lodovico Pavoni was beatified on April 14, 2002 , Pope John Paul II stated in his sermon:

“He was a particularly sensitive person and did everything he could to care for poor and abandoned young people, especially the deaf and mute. He developed his activities in a variety of areas, starting with educational work in the field of publishing, with original apostolic ideas and courageous and innovative actions. All of his activities were based on a solid spirituality. With his testimony he exhorts us to trust Jesus and to penetrate ever deeper into the mystery of his love. "

On May 10, 2016, Pope Francis confirmed a miracle that had come about at Pavoni's intercession as a prerequisite for the canonization , which Pope Francis performed on October 16 of the same year in Rome.
